Lauren Price Dominates McCaskill For Historic World Title

Lauren Price defeated Jessica McCaskill to win the WBA, IBO, and Ring Magazine Welterweight Titles via a technical decision.

Price was fighting in her hometown, aiming to secure her first world title. But rather than succumbing to the pressure, Price stood up to the task. She started the fight by imposing pressure, using her southpaw stance to push the American on the defensive. A big left hand buckled McCaskill, with the Welsh crowd roaring behind their fighter.

McCaskill immediately tried to rough up Price in round two. The referee warned her to keep it clean, and Price used her boxing skills to avoid getting into a physical bout. McCaskill was behind early on, chasing Price, the calmer fighter. McCaskill had some success in the fourth.

She increased her output, pushing Price back to try and establish herself in the fight. But that did not last long. The two fighters clashed heads in the fifth round, resulting in bleeding around McCaskill’s eye as it was swelling. Price sensed that her opponent was hurt as she targeted the eye.

A massive right hand connected near the eye during round eight. The foreshadowed the stoppage that came in the next round. The referee stopped the fight after just two seconds into the ninth round. Price took her record to 7-0. She was leading the scorecards 90-82 when the fight was waived off.

Post-Fight

“The atmosphere has got to be up there with winning that gold medal. I can’t thank everyone enough for who came out and supported me. I had a tough fight tonight, credit to Jessica. [And] I respect her. She’s a credit not to just women’s boxing but boxing in general. She loves a war; she loves a dogfight. [And] She came at me from round one. It took me a few rounds to get my distance. I found my rhythm in the end.

“I enjoyed myself in there and I’m only going to get better. This was only my seventh professional fight. I believe this is just the start. I want to create a legacy. You see what Katie Taylor did for Ireland, I want to do the same for Wales. I want to in a few years be selling out the Principality Stadium. I know Jessica’s game; she loves a dog fight. It took me a couple of rounds to find my distance,” Price stated

“Things went wrong. I felt like you should let the champion go out on her shield, give me my four minutes. Lauren was the only person who has been able to take belts from me, and so congratulations to her. She has a bright future. I’m so proud of her; she’s setting a great example. Credit to Lauren, she’s the only person who has taken belts from me. I can rebound from anything. I grew up homeless, so getting punched in the face is nothing. There was holding, a lot of headbutts,” McCaskill said
