Bill Belichick on Drake Maye comparing himself to Josh Allen: ‘We’ll see about that’

“I think there are some similarities in terms of size and athleticism, but Josh Allen’s a pretty special player now,” Belichick concluded.

Josh Allen has been in the NFL since 2018 and, during that time, he’s been named a Pro Bowler twice. In those six NFL seasons, he’s completed 63.2 percent of passes for 22,703 yards and 167 touchdowns to 78 interceptions. He’s also athletic and runs well, with 3,611 rushing yards and 53 rushing touchdowns.

Similarly, Drake Maye is a big and athletic quarterback who in 2022 led North Carolina in rushing yards while still being an excellent passer. For his college career, Maye was a two-year starter who completed 64.9 percent of passes for 8,018 yards and 63 touchdowns to 16 interceptions. He also rushed for 1,209 yards and 16 touchdowns.

It’s easy enough to see the comparison. However, to Belichick’s point, Allen has developed into being a pretty good NFL quarterback. Maybe might have some similarities but he’s yet to play a snap as a professional.

Drake Maye on going to Patriots

When Drake Maye was introduced to New England Patriots fans, he did his best to make one thing clear, he isn’t Tom Brady.

“Tom Brady’s the G.O.A.T.,” Maye said.

“It’s easy to say that. He’s the best that ever played this game. I’m not going to be Tom Brady. So, I’m just going to try to be Drake Maye, and from there, I’m just trying to learn from him, hopefully get to know him a little bit. Other than that, just try to soak it up, be a sponge and try to learn all I can from him. He’s the man of that town.”
