Celtic have been linked with a move for highly rated Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson. The 23-year-old has impressed for The Black Cats in the Championship; however, these displays have caught the eye of potential suitors.

Celtic are on the lookout for a new No.1 in the summer with Joe Hart retiring and the former England U21 Internationalist has emerged as a contender. And Brendan Rodgers has also spoken about perhaps signing two goalkeepers this summer.

As reported by Sunderland Echo, Celtic are interested in bringing the player in but face competition from Liverpool and Arsenal.

Speaking to Football League World, ex-Premier League player Carlton Palmer believes that Celtic would be a good move for Patterson’s career, but warns he may cost £10m plus.

“So many of the Sunderland young players are linked with moves away from the football club. Obviously, it’s been a disappointing season. They were hoping to be in the play-offs this season, but it has not materialised.

“One name that has been mentioned quite a lot last summer and at Christmas is their goalkeeper, Anthony Patterson, who has been a consistent performer for the club. Celtic are a massive club, a huge club, a very good manager in Brendan Rodgers, European football.

“Of course, that would be something that you would not be able to turn down. Celtic would have to part with the best part of £15-20 million for Anthony Patterson, and I could see him leaving Sunderland to play in the Scottish Premiership, and then, if he is still young enough, he can come back to the Premier League.

“If he is available, I think there will be a few clubs in the Premier League who will be looking to take him on a permanent basis. A very, very talented goalkeeper.”

Given his his age and nationality, Patterson will maintain his value and can compete for trophies and play in Europe at Celtic. Fraser Forster serves as an example that Celtic players can be called up to the England team, something that Patterson will likely have ambitions of.

Patterson has made 44 appearances in England’s second tier, conceding 51 times and keeping 13 clean sheets.
